John Stamford’s story is an excellent example of how C4DI can serve as a unique platform for those looking for invaluable industry experience and incredible opportunities.
Having first joined C4DI three years ago, when he was just six months into his PhD in Data Science, John has managed to harness the true power of the community, whilst educating and inspiring others along the way.
Now, he’s almost at the finish line of his PhD and will be handing in his extensive 150-page thesis in the coming months.
“I was interested in joining C4DI because I wanted to see the commercial side of the academic subject I was studying,” John explains. “My PhD is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which means that I’ve had the chance to collaborate with Philips Healthcare.”
John has been researching how Machine Learning can help in the healthcare industry, in particular when treating patients with heart failure.
“I’ve been able to use the space at C4DI in a number of ways,” he enthuses.
“Firstly, it’s great to have a base for research that is outside of the University’s campus. But, it’s so much more than that; I’ve been able to interact and collaborate with so many different companies and really hone in on what I am researching.”
Frequently visiting the building to meet with fellow members and conduct research, John has been able to gain a real insight into how Machine Learning can transform the way organisations work.
“It’s a great place to be and the C4DI team has the amazing ability to connect individuals and businesses with the right people.”
John has recently begun working at Spencer Group as Director of Machine Learning.
“We develop the frameworks and infrastructure to enable the company to incorporate Machine Learning into its existing software platform.”
Being at the C4DI has also empowered John to refine his interests and discover what he wants to do.
“My experience not only allowed me to see Machine Learning from a commercial point of view, but also defined the path I wanted to go down.”
Each year exceptional students are given the opportunity to apply for C4DI's Student Membership. A limited number of applicants that pass and who could truly benefit from using the building’s facilities and linking up with its members are given membership bursaries.
“If you are new to the building - or thinking of joining - I would advise you to be distinctive in what you do and offer. Immersing yourself in the community will help you find your edge!”
If you are a student, or have a brilliant idea for a startup, and would like to find out more about our Student Membership scheme, please find our Application process here.
